Aesthetics

Assignment:

Attendance/Participation in discussion

Purpose(s):

Involvement of students in their own education.  Registering a small number of students, the class has an opportunity to have rich discussions of the readings, around which, along with examples of art works and aesthetic experiences, our class time will be organized.

Due date(s):

Every class.

Content/Instructions:

Each student is expected to be part of the work of education during every class meeting.  This might take the form of thematically substantive questions (questions about course mechanics do not count), responses to instructor’s questions, challenges to claims made by others, statements that support others’, expressions of wonderment and articulate confusion.

Format: oral/written, Length (minutes or words), citations (number and format),

Oral.  Cite passages where appropriate.  Also, listen.

How graded and percent of final grade:

When you arrive for class, I place a check in the attendance book if you are present, a minus if absent.  When you leave, if you have participated, you receive a plus (+) beside the check.  If you have not participated, the check stands alone.  When it comes time to calculate your final grade, the check alone is worth a B, and the check-plus worth an A.  Absence, unless excused, is worth no points.  Attendance/participation are worth 30% of your grade.
