ARCH 201 Introduction to Architecture EXERCISE 2 Due Friday October 22

Responding to Context:

In this exercise you are asked to integrate the following principles:

• Establish necessary separations and controls.
• Establish necessary transitions.
• Locate rooms in the most logical and opportune locations.
• Respond to topography, the vegetation, etc.
• Respond to the heat, the cold, etc.
• Respond to the sunlight.
• Inflect to fit, vary, or to mark certain components.
• Make scalar adjustments (up or down).
• Make connections: establish opportunities for people to see, feel, and otherwise realize the specific features of the setting.
• Organize the circulation system so that people will come into contact with the context as they move.

Using the footprint of the schematic “New Building” above, place the following rooms on the ground floor plan:

• One main classroom, approx. 60’x 30’.
• Three smaller classrooms, approx. 20’ x 40’ each.
• One main entrance, two minor entrances.
• Circulation space, including stairs to the upper floor(s).

As you are placing the rooms, let the principles listed above guide your decisions. Draw in freehand one ground floor plan/site plan, one section (cross or long), and all exterior elevations of the building. Draw them at approximately twice the scale of the plan above. Show how the edges of the building are developed to respond to sun and weather; develop evocative entrance transitions and relationships between rooms and outdoor rooms, show how the building makes contributions to its neighbors and reflects its unique position on campus.
